Photography & Videography Standards
Photographers, Videographers, and Influencers:
Below are the fundamental requirements, expectations, and guidelines for our co-creations.
- Professional Standard – Media submitted is well-composed and well-lit, in an environment appropriate to the product, campaign, or intent.
- Originals & Finals – We’re certainly after your polished, final work. However, we still need the high-resolution originals and versions working up to it. For example, a captioned final video can’t be cut up and reused. We require all raw files for paid collaborations.
- Compose Creatively – Find the angles that best feature the subject in the background. Think and approach it like a commercial product photographer. Be aware of distractions, harsh or inconsistent lighting, etc.
- Generous Compositions – We need media with copy space around the subject for us to overlay graphics. Tips: Get the composition that looks good, and zoom out another 20% (we’ll crop in post production). Shoot multiple compositions (vertical, horizontal, wide, close-up, copyspace on left, copyspace on right, etc.).
- Generally, Shoot Horizontally – Let us crop to vertical when needed. Most of our needs are horizontal.
- Clear Subject, Clear & Smooth Focus – Knowing your equipment and using it well is essential. In photos, the appropriate subject must be in focus (whether it’s the spoon, the bag, the person, the mountain, the whole scene, etc.). In videos, be sure that the focus point is not hunting and shifting.
- Exciting & Engaged – Be sure all influencers/other subjects are fully engaged with the camera and engaging with the audience. We value your authenticity and encourage creativity, but need natural engagement to evoke and elicit excitement for our premium product.
- Clean & Clear Audio – When a speaking subject is featured, audio must be clean, clear, and prominently above any background noise. Ensure no copyrighted music is in the background. Audio is not required for B-roll style footage.
- Properly Released: All featured subjects must provide an unlimited release for the use of their likeness, in any medium, indefinitely.
- Our “No AI” Policy: Our products always need to be presented clearly and accurately, and we need to ensure legal compliance in a number of ways. Therefore, at this time, we do not allow the display of machine-generated photo and video creations. If you have a special circumstance, please contact us to submit for pre-approval.

How to Hold the Product
- When possible, try to hold the packages in a way where your thumb or fingers don’t cover the brand name or product name.
- Be sure that at least “Field Fuel” is uncovered and in full display.
- Hold a healthy, heaping spoon above for the MREs.
- Find a way to “Feature it” in your hands rather than “Grab it.”
Build Scenes: Capture Compositions of the Packages in your Environment
- We LOVE still life shots in great environments!
- Use props… Extra credit for building a scene with what you have with you, as if it’s a product photography session.
- Show the bag closed with the spoon next to it.
- Show the bag open with the spoon in it.
- Show the bag open with the spoon having food on it above the bag. Perhaps more prominently and artfully in front of the bag.
MRE Tip: Capture Hunks of Food on a Spoon
- Show the heaping spoon alone in the environment with AND without the bag.
- Consider beautiful compositions in scenes that we can’t get anywhere else.
- Leave copy space so we can put words and graphics.
Balance Lighting: Subject vs. Background
- Be sure the product is featured with an appropriate amount of light.
- This is important in scenes where the product is held in front of a distant background, or where the background is much lighter.
- If the camera is unable to balance and harmonize the shot, consider adding light to the package.
Photo + Video Wishlist
Below are some ideas we’d love your help capturing.
“The Journey of the Bag”
- Create a story featuring the bag’s experience
- Show the bag moving through your journey with multiple photos or videos
- Capture key events such as laying out all your gear and packing your bag with our products, slowly pulling them out of the bag, placing them in a rock or table with a cool background, etc.
You, in Action + the Environment
- Don’t forget we need some shots of YOU doing your thing in this environment, from a great composition to help us tell your story (without food).
- Panoramic Environments: Also, sometimes we photoshop a hand holding the product in on top of a background, so please share photos of the beautiful scenes you discover on your adventure.
Creative Comparisons of Convenience
- Did you pack some dried product? Show how our fresh MREs appear in comparison.
- Or reveal the ease of eating out of the bag vs. the preparation requirements of other products.
SUSTAIN® Sustaining You
- Capture yourself enduring your adventure while consuming or holding our SUSTAIN® product.
- Scenes & Action Shot Ideas: On the bike, while running, a short break while climbing, on the sidelines, even at the office…
